While Christianity may be unique among the world's religions in seeking creedal summaries of ultimate reality, Buddhism may be the foremost example of the opposite: readiness to negate any formulation that shapes or colors our ability to see the whole situation. Why is this and how does Buddhism compare and contrast with other faiths? And what does this say about our own spiritual path?

Reel Issues: Fear of Immigration
Video and Dialogue Series
As most of you know I serve on the NCCJ-Harmony board because I believe in the work that they do. The ACLU, NCCJ and Harmony have partnered to bring you a series of "reel" issues with a video and dialogue series exploring social justice issues. On Thursday, Sept. 1st at 7:00 pm there will be a video followed by dialogue on the topic of "Fear of Immigration" at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church located at 4501 Walnut (no cost).
Video Hightlight: "The shocking hate-based attempted murders of two Mexican day laborers catapult a small Long Island town into national headlines, unmasking a new front line in the border wars: suburbia."

Rime Rummage Sale
Take a look in the closet, attic, basement or garage for all those goodies you've been holding on to. The Rime Center needs your stuff for a rummage sale. The sale will take place at the Rime Center Friday, Sept. 2nd from 6-9 pm and Saturday Spet. 3rd from 8 am - 6 pm. If you don't have items to donate, you can stil help by volunteering to work at the event or help with pre-event and sinage. 9/11 Commemoration
On Sunday Sept. 11th the Rime Center will commemorate 9/11 by doing a special Green Tara practice instead of our regular service. Following the Green Tara practice we will do a smoke offering dedicated to everyone affected by the tragedy.

Noa Baum
A Land Twice Promised
On Monday Sept. 12th at 7:00 pm at the American Hearland Theater located in Crown Center we are pleased to announced the acclaimed performance artist, Noam Baum, an Israeli who began a heartfelt dialogue with a Palestinia woman while living in the United States, weaves together their memories and their mother's stories.

Lama Lodu Rinpoche
Viewing Emptiness
Venerable Lama Lodu Rinpoche, renowned Vajrayana master, scholar and lineage holder of the Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism will visit the Rime Center September 23rd through
the 25th as part of a weekend retreat and empowerment.
Lama Lodu's teachings will be on "Viewing Emptiness." Emptiness is the Buddhist philosophy that all things are totally empty of any defining essence. Buddhists believe that all things have no fixed identity or inherent existence and are in a state of impermanence or change and flux.
Schedule:
Friday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m. -- First teaching
Saturday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m. to noon and 2-4 p.m. -- Second and third teachings
Sunday, Sept. 25, 11:30 a.m. -- Sunday Dharma talk
Sunday, Sept. 25, 2 p.m. -- Empowerment
Residential Retreat
All teachings/empowerment -- $125 in advance or $145 at the door. Includes two nights at the Rime Center with two meals per day.
Non-residential Retreat
All teachings/empowerment -- $100 in advance or $120 at the door. No meals are included.
Individual Teachings or Empowerment
$35 each

Christmas in October
The Rime Center will participate in an annual Kansas City event known as "Christmas in October" Saturday Oct. 8th. The program is designed to provide home repair assistance to those in need. Volunteers from every skill level are neede, even if you don't know how to swing to a hammer. More information in future e-mail updates or contact Marisa Stanley.

On Monday, Oct. 10th at 7:30 pm CRES along with Open Circle Productions will host world renowned religious scholar, Houston Smith who will speak at the Rime Center. Ticket information in future e-mail updates.

Tibetan Monk Palden Gyatso
World renowned Tibetan Monk Palden Gyatso spent 33 years in a Chinese prison. His best selling book The Autobiography of a Tibetan Monk tells about the years of torture he suffered. We will have copies of his book for sale and he there will be a book signing following his talk on Thursday.

October 28-November 6
Drepung Gomang Monastery Monks
Monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery will bring a powerfully unique cultural tour to the Rime Center highlighting the sacred arts of Tibet. Eight Tibetan monks from the Drepung Gomang Monastery, including the former Abbot,will visit the Rime Center from Oct. 28 - Nov. 6th.
The monks will give a performance of their "Cultural Pageant"on Saturday Oct. 29th at Penn Valley Community College's theater. The Rime Program Committee is currently working on several other cultural events for monks during their visit. Ticketing and details to follow in future e-mail updates.
