SUMMARY:Dhammapada: The Sayings of the Buddha
DESCRIPTION:This classic text of teaching verses from the earliest period of Buddhism in India conveys the philosophical and practical foundations of the Buddhist tradition. The text presents two distinct goals for leading a spiritual life: the first is attaining happiness in this life (or in future lives); the second goal is the achievement of spiritual liberation\, freedom\, absolute peace. Many of the key themes of the verses are presented in dichotomies or pairs\, for example\, grief and suffering versus joy; developing the mind instead of being negligent about one’s mental attitude and conduct; virtuous action versus misconduct; and being truthful versus being deceitful. The purpose of these contrasts is\, very simply\, to describe the difference between what leads to desirable outcomes and what does not. \nWe’re going to do explore the passages in this foundational Buddhist text together. \nRegister & Pay \nFacilitator: Daniel Scharpenburg\nDate: 4 sessions beginning on November 2\, 2022\nTime: 7:45 – 9:00 pm\nClass Fee: $30\nText: The Dhammapada: A New Translation of the Buddhist Classic with Annotations – Get it on Amazon or at the Rime Center gift shop. \nThese classes are available to EVERYONE. SUMMARY:Steps to the Great Perfection - Online
DESCRIPTION:Join Lama Matt as we discuss the book Steps to the Great Perfection. A compilation of teachings on the seven contemplations\, an ancient system of mind-training/lojong teachings that has been preserved as part of a rare set of instructions on Dzogchen\, or the Great Perfection. This book is unique because although the lojong teachings of the Kadam tradition are well known\, this is the first time the mind-training teachings from the Dzogchen tradition have been presented in an English translation\, and most Western scholars and practitioners are unaware that such mind-training techniques even exist in Dzogchen. The contemplations themselves are vividly described\, and some unfold as dramatic stories in which the meditator imagines himself or herself as the main character. Thus\, they are quite accessible for beginning practitioners. \nRegister & Pay \nFacilitator: Lama Matthew Palden Gocha\nDate: 4 sessions beginning on Wednesday\, August 10\, 2022\nTime: 7:30 – 9:00 pm\nClass Fee: $30\nText: Steps to the Great Perfection – Get it on Amazon or at the Rime Center gift shop. \nThese classes are available to EVERYONE. SUMMARY:Boundless Heart Class - Online
DESCRIPTION:Compassion\, kindness\, equanimity\, and joy are not only the fruits of the awakened life but also the path to it—attitudes of mind that can be cultivated through intention and dedication. SUMMARY:The Way of Tenderness – Online Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Rime Center’s Rainbow Body Meditation Group is proud to sponsor a four week discussion on The Way of Tenderness. In The Way of Tenderness\, Zen priest Zenju Earthlyn Manuel brings Buddhist philosophies of emptiness and appearance to bear on race\, sexuality\, and gender\, using wisdom forged through personal experience and practice to rethink problems of identity and privilege. \nRegister Online \nManuel brings her own experiences as a lesbian black woman into conversation with Buddhism to square our ultimately empty nature with superficial perspectives of everyday life. Her hard-won insights reveal that dry wisdom alone is not sufficient to heal the wounds of the marginalized; an effective practice must embrace the tenderness found where conventional reality and emptiness intersect. Only warmth and compassion can cure hatred and heal the damage it wreaks within us. This is a book that will teach us all. \nFacilitator: Circe Namkha Rangdrol\nDate: November 3\, 2021\nTime: 7:45 – 9 pm\nClass Fee: $30\nText: The Way of Tenderness: Awakening through Race\, Sexuality\, and Gender – Get it on Amazon

SUMMARY:Radical Dharma: An Online Book Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Rime Center’s Social Justice Committee is proud to sponsor a 5 week online book discussion on Radical Dharma. Radical Dharma: Talking Race\, Love\, and Liberation\, ignites a long-overdue dialogue about how the legacy of racial injustice and white supremacy plays out in society at large and Buddhist communities in particular\, this urgent call to action outlines a new dharma that takes into account the ways that racism and privilege prevent our collective awakening. \nRegister in advance to get the Zoom link. \nRegister Online \nRev. angel Kyodo williams\, Lama Rod Owens\, and Jasmine Syedullah represent a new voice in American Buddhism. Offering their own histories and experiences as illustrations of the types of challenges facing dharma practitioners and teachers who are different from those of the past five decades\, they ask how teachings that transcend color\, class\, and caste are hindered by discrimination and the dynamics of power\, shame\, and ignorance. Their illuminating argument goes beyond a demand for the equality and inclusion of diverse populations to advancing a new dharma that deconstructs rather than amplifies systems of suffering and prepares us to weigh the shortcomings not only of our own minds but also of our communities. \nFacilitator: Nicole Esquibel & Lama Matt\nDate: October 11\, 2021\nTime: 7:45 – 9 pm\nClass Fee: Free\nText: Radical Dharma: Talking Race\, Love\, and Liberation – Get it on Amazon

SUMMARY:Four Foundations of Mindfulness – Online
DESCRIPTION:For the followers of the Buddha and his teachings\, there is a need for great emphasis on the practice of meditation. One must see the straightforward logic that mind is the cause of confusion and that by transcending confusion one attains the enlightened state. This can only take place through the practice of meditation. The Buddha himself experienced this\, by working on his own mind\, and what he learned has been handed down to us. The four foundations of mindfulness are regarded as fundamental and lays a strong foundation for practice. \nRegister Online \n  \nInstructor: Nora Swami Kuvirananda and Luis Dakpa Gelek\nDates: Four sessions beginning Wednesday October 6\, 2021\nTimes: 7:45 – 9:00 pm\nClass Fee: $30\nText: The Four Foundations of Mindfulness in Plain English – Get it on Amazon
