SUMMARY:Basics of Buddhism
DESCRIPTION:Have you always wanted to understand Buddhism? Buddhism is a 2\,500 year old tradition that teaches us how to end pain and suffering in ourselves and others. This 8 week course will cover the life of the Buddha\, basic Buddhist teachings\, as well as practical application of these principles in daily life. This event will be in-person with an online option available. \nRegister Online \nDate: 8 sessions beginning on Wednesday\, June 26\, 2024\nTime: 7:45 – 9:00 pm\nClass Fee: $50 \nNote: In-person class size limited to 12 people. \nThe main book that will be used for the challenge will be Buddhism for Beginners by Ven. Thubten Chodron. This book takes the most commonly asked questions—beginning with “What is the essence of the Buddha’s teachings?”—and provides simple answers in plain English. Thubten Chodron’s responses to the questions that always seem to arise among people approaching Buddhism make this an exceptionally complete and accessible introduction—as well as a manual for living a more peaceful\, mindful\, and satisfying Life. \nWednesday Online Discussions beginning June 26th\nParticipants will meet either in-person or online Wednesdays at 7:45 pm to discuss the week’s topic. There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion about the practice that will include actions that can be applied to daily life/practice.

SUMMARY:Sutra Study Sunday – The Gold Sūtra
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the rich repository of Buddhist Sutras\, both Pali Canon and Tibetan Kangyur every first Sunday of the month after the Sunday Service. Sūtra (Pali. sutta) means ‘something that was heard from someone else’ and usually connotes ‘a discourse’. In The Gold Sūtra\, the Buddha explains that the mind of awakening is like gold because it is pure. He also teaches the analogy that just as a smith shapes gold into various forms\, yet the nature of the gold itself does not change\, so too the mind of awakening manifests in various unique ways\, yet the nature of the mind of awakening itself does not change. \nFacilitators: Lama Matthew Rice (Lobpön Palden Gocha) and Daniel Scharpenburg\nText: The Gold Sūtra

SUMMARY:Sutra Study Sunday – Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion Sutta
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the rich repository of Buddhist Sutras\, both Pali Canon and Tibetan Kangyur every first Sunday of the month after the Sunday Service. Sūtra (Pali. sutta) means ‘something that was heard from someone else’ and usually connotes ‘a discourse’. Said to be the Buddha’s very first sermon\, or discourse\, after this awakening. According to other suttas in the Pali Canon\, the Buddha had doubts about whether to even try teaching what he had realized\, figuring no one would be able to comprehend or master it. However\, the god Brahma assured him there would be at least a few people “with little dust in their eyes\,” and begged the Buddha to teach. \nFacilitators: Lama Matthew Rice (Lobpön Palden Gocha) and Daniel Scharpenburg\nText: Setting the Wheel of Dhamma in Motion Sutta

SUMMARY:108 Day Bodhisattva Challenge
DESCRIPTION:This challenge will be practice intensive for those who want to apply their understanding of Bodhicitta with daily practice. We welcome new students who are looking to learn about the Bodhisattva Mind Training and how to apply it to their Buddhist path\, as well as experienced students who have insights to share. This event will be in-person with an online option available. \n“The Tibetan word lojong literally means ‘mind training’ but the practice really has more to do with training our attitude\, training us out of the habitual ways that we respond to situation that happen to us\, especially adverse circumstances.” – Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo \nThe main book that will be used for the challenge will be The Heroic Heart: Awakening Unbound Compassion by Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo. The Heroic Heart Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo illuminates the heart of Mahayana Buddhism—bodhicitta—describing it as “the selfless expression of boundless compassion.” Jetsunma uses as a touchstone the famous Tibetan Buddhist text The Thirty-Seven Verses on the Practice of a Bodhisattva. Here\, she reveals how to become such a compassionate hero\, the bodhisattva in training\, and helps us to face the uncertain tides of the world\, however joyful or dangerous\, with a deep wish to find meaning and uncover the ultimate heart of wisdom and compassion. \nRegister today! \nKick off party for the 108 Day Bodhisattva Challenge is Sunday December 31\, 2023 at 10:30am and will be during the Sunday Service. \nSunday Dharma Talks beginning December 31st\nEach week kicks off a new topic with a Sunday Dharma talk given by Lama Matt and the other Dharma Facilitators. Dharma Talks will be uploaded to the Rime Center’s Podcast each Monday. Participants are then encouraged to read the topic from the book. \nWednesday Online Discussions beginning January 3rd\nParticipants will meet either in-person or online Wednesdays at 7:45 pm to discuss the week’s topic. SUMMARY:Sutra Study Sunday - The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom\, the Blessed Mother
In this famous scripture\, known popularly as The Heart Sūtra\, the Buddha Śākyamuni inspires his senior monk Śāriputra to request instructions from the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara on the way to practice the perfection of wisdom. Avalokiteśvara then describes how an aspiring practitioner of the perfection of wisdom must first understand how all phenomena lack an intrinsic nature\, which amounts to the realization of emptiness. Next\, Avalokiteśvara reveals a brief mantra that the practitioner can recite as a method for engendering this understanding experientially. Following Avalokiteśvara’s teaching\, the Buddha offers his endorsement and confirms that this is the foremost way to practice the perfection of wisdom. \nFacilitators: Lama Matthew Rice (Lobpön Palden Gocha) and Daniel Scharpenburg\nText: The Heart of the Perfection of Wisdom\, the Blessed Mother

SUMMARY:Sutra Study Sunday - Kalama Sutta
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we explore the rich repository of Buddhist Sutras\, both Pali Canon and Tibetan Kangyur every first Sunday of the month after the Sunday Service. Sūtra (Pali. sutta) means ‘something that was heard from someone else’ and usually connotes ‘a discourse’. The sutta starts off by describing how the Buddha passes through the village of Kesaputta and is greeted by its inhabitants\, a clan called the Kalamas. They ask for his advice: they say that many wandering holy men and ascetics pass through\, expounding their teachings and criticizing the teachings of others. So whose teachings should they follow? He delivers in response a sermon that serves as an entry point to the Dhamma\, the Buddhist teachings for those unconvinced by mere spectacular revelation. \nWe will also be having a potluck\, so please bring a vegetarian dish to share. \nFacilitators: Lama Matthew Rice (Lobpön Palden Gocha) and Daniel Scharpenburg\nText: Kalama Sutta

SUMMARY:Four Foundations of Mindfulness
DESCRIPTION:For the followers of the Buddha and his teachings\, there is a need for great emphasis on the practice of meditation. One must see the straight forward logic that mind is the cause of confusion and that by transcending confusion one attains the enlightened state. This can only take place through the practice of meditation. The Buddha himself experienced this\, by working on his own mind\, and what he learned has been handed down to us. The four foundations of mindfulness are regarded as fundamental and lays a strong foundation for practice. \nRegister Online \nInstructor: Lama Matthew Palden Gocha\, Nora Swami Kuvirananda and Luis Dakpa Gelek\nDates: Four sessions beginning Wednesday September 20\, 2023\nTimes: 7:45 – 9:00 pm\nClass Fee: $30\nText: The Four Foundations of Mindfulness in Plain English – Get it on Amazon \nThese classes are available to EVERYONE. SUMMARY:Sutra Study Sunday - The Questions of the Nāga King Sāgara
In this very short sūtra\, the Buddha explains to a nāga king and an assembly of monks that reciting the four aphorisms of the Dharma is equivalent to recitation of all of the 84\,000 articles of the Dharma. He urges them to make diligent efforts to engage in understanding the four aphorisms (also called the four seals)\, which are the defining philosophical tenets of the Buddhist doctrine. \nWe will also be having a potluck\, so please bring a vegetarian dish to share. \nFacilitators: Lama Matthew Rice (Lobpön Palden Gocha) and Daniel Scharpenburg\nText: The Questions of the Nāga King Sāgara

SUMMARY:What is a Tsok Offering? - Pop Up Class
DESCRIPTION:In her visit to the Rime Center in 2014\, Lama Lena recommended that the Rime Center perform tsoks on a regular basis as a way to benefit the sangha and build stronger bonds with each other. But what is a tsok? \nIn this pop-up class Lama Matthew Palden Gocha will introduce the practice of the Tibetan tsok. He will talk about the origins of the practice along with how to perform the ritual from his personal experience. In the book\, “Handbook for Half Buddhas” Tulku Yeshe Rinpoche says\, “If you are a tantric practitioner\, you should attend Tsok-Kor practice with pure vision or view. In other words\, you should view all phenomena as inherently pure and free from defilements of samsara. If you are not a tantric practitioner\, you should attend Tsok-Kor practice with a mind focused exclusively on positive thoughts.” \nThis event is free and in-person only\, but space is limited. Please reserve your spot with the registration below.
