 osar\, the Tibetan New Year. This new year is designated as the year of th
 e Iron Mouse.\n\nLosar traces its origins to the pre-Buddhist period in Ti
 bet when\, every winter\, Tibetans held a spiritual ceremony\, offering la
 rge amounts of incense to please local spirits\, deities\, and protectors.
  Around the period when the measurement of time based on phases of the moo
 n was introduced\, this ceremony evolved into an annual Buddhist festival\
 , which may have been the first celebration of what has become the traditi
 onal farmers’ festivals. Later\, after the rudiments of the science of a
 strology were introduced in Tibet\, the farmers’ festival became known a
 s Losar.\n\nThe Rime’s Losar celebration will include a potluck\, Tibeta
 n food\, Tibetan Mo divination\, linked verse\, tsa tsa\, prayer flag maki

SUMMARY:Full Day Meditation Retreat – Green Tara
DESCRIPTION:Green Tara is a wonderful Yidam practice to do that helps elimi
 nates fears and obstacles (i.e. fears within your mind) from one’s life.
  Tara is a completely enlightened Buddha who made a promise in the distant
  past that after reaching complete enlightenment she would always appear i
 n the form of a female for the benefit of all beings. She especially prote
 cts all sentient beings from the eight great fears.\n\nSadhana practice is
  extremely beneficial and helps us overcome mental\, physical\, and spirit
 ual obstacles. Through a sadhana we are replacing the old patterns and tho
 ughts that we have with new ones. The practitioner is encouraged to see al
 l beings and environments\, to hear all sounds\, and to experience all tho
 ughts as divine and pure. It is through these practices that we work to at
 tain spiritual realization.  The sadhana practice involves chanting the t
 antric liturgy\, meditation\, and chanting of mantras.\n\nDuring this retr
 eat\, Lama Matthew Palden Gocha will give teachings on Green Tara along wi
 th discussion on Yidam sadhana practice. The retreat is suitable for begin
 ners as well as more experienced practitioners wanting to deepen their exp

SUMMARY:Lha Bab Düchen\, the ‘Festival of the Descent from Heaven’
DESCRIPTION:Lha Bab Düchen occurs on the 22nd day of the ninth Tibetan mon
 th. Buddha’s mother Mayadevi was reborn in Indra’s heaven. To repay he
 r kindness and to liberate her\, and also to benefit the gods\, Buddha spe
 nt three months teachings in the realm of the gods. When he was about to r
 eturn to this world\, Indra and Brahma manifested three stairs of 80\,000 
 yojanas each reaching this world in Sankisa. As the Buddha walked down the
  central one\, they accompanied him to his left and right carrying umbrell
 as to honor him. He descended to earth in Sankisa\, which is located in mo
 dern Uttar Pradesh\, and which is counted among the eight holy places.\n\n
 The Rime Center will be hosting a special puja to commemorate the Festival
  of the Descent from Heaven and will be open during the day for you to com
 e in and meditate at your own pace and time limit. The Special Puja will b
 egin at 7:00 pm and will be led by Ven. Geshe Tsewang Thinley.\n\nSchedule

 ity. Tara is a completely enlightened buddha and as a young bodhisattva sh
 e promised always to appear in the form of a female bodhisattva and goddes

 ears. In this white form she appears specifically for the purpose of besto
 wing longevity.\n\nThe practice of tsok\, which is primarily a practice of
  offering. It is not just a practice of offering however\; it is also a po
 werful method for purifying our samaya. Sometimes it is said that the best
  method for purifying samaya is the fire offering\, and tsok practice is t

DESCRIPTION:The Rime Sangha will conclude with a final hike at the Tallgras
 s Prairie National Preserve on Saturday October 16th. It will be an all da
 y outing since the park is about a two hour drive from Kansas City. Sangha
  member Beniah has offered to carpool in his van\, which holds about 10 pe
 ople. The caravan to the Tallgrass Prairie will leave at 9 am from the Rim
 e Center and should get us to the park around 11am.\n\nThe plan is to hike
  the 3.2 mile Scenic Overlook Trail\, and if time allows we may hike anoth
 er shorter trail at the end of the Scenic Overlook Trail. After the hike w
 e can stop in Emporia for a late lunch before we head back to KC. If the w

 ery strong clinging and passions. Externally\, this causes war and the use
  of biological and chemical weapons. Many new diseases with no known cure 
 appear and epidemics spread quickly. Even friends\, husbands\, wives\, and
  children seem intent on cheating and manipulating each other\, so that no
  one knows who to rely on. This naturally leads to imbalances in the outer
  elements. The water element causes floods\, tsunamis\, and hurricanes\; t
 he fire element causes volcanoes\, drought\, and heat waves\; wind causes 
 tornadoes and windstorms\; and the earth element causes earthquakes and la
 ndslides. Likewise\, all the different classes of spirits become upset. Th
 e whole world\, whether it is the inner elements of sentient beings or the
  outer elements\, is extremely turbulent and out of control. At times such
  as this it is difficult for Buddhas\, Bodhisattvas and wrathful deities t
 o penetrate beings’ minds. That is when this form of Hayagriva appears."

SUMMARY:Refuge & Lay Pratimoksha Vows Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:Taking refuge in the three jewels is a strict prerequisite for 
 any kind of relationship with the Buddhist teachings. The objects of refug
 e are the: Buddha\, Dharma &amp\; Sangha (also known as the precious tripl
 e gem) grant protection to the spiritual seeker. The refuge ceremony is wh
 en one “officially” becomes Buddhist. The act of taking refuge is a de
 claration of one’s intention to follow the Buddhist path.\n\nThe lay vow
 s consist of taking the five lay vows which are: 1) not to kill\, 2) not t
 o steal\, 3) not to lie\, 4) not to commit sexual misconduct\, and 5) not 
 to take any intoxicants.\n\nThe format will consist of two teachings sessi
 ons each preceded by 15 minute meditation sessions\, and ending with the r
 efuge ceremony and pratimoksha ceremony. As part of the refuge ceremony on
 e is also given a new refuge name. Participants can take refuge only or re
 fuge and pratimoksha vows sequentially.\n\nInstructor: Lama Matthew Palde
