Instagram post 2196595658785109565_1665309771 Nagarjuna is revered as an unsurpassed master by all Buddhist schools. His teachings provide the foundation for the Madhyamika School, which propounds the ‘Middle Way’ philosophy, accepted as the highest view within the sutrayana. From the realm of the nagas he brought back the extensive Prajnaparamita scriptures.

He is often depicted in composite form comprising human and naga characteristics. Often the naga aspect forms a canopy crowning and shielding his human head. The notion of the naga is found throughout Indian religious culture, and typically signifies an intelligent serpent or dragon, who is responsible for the rains, lakes and other bodies of water.

He received teachings from Maitreya and transcribed them as the ‘Five Treatises of Maitreya’. Together with Asanga's own commentaries, these texts became the basis for the philosophical schools known as Chittamatra.

The central images are then surrounded by 108 smaller images of Shakyamuni Buddha. These types of paintings with a central peaceful figure and multiples of smaller surrounding figures are generally commissioned for the purpose of generating merit and overcoming obstacles.

Instagram post 2166124905082256798_1665309771 Shri Shmashana Adhipati, Father-Mother. Also known as Chitipati or Lord of the Charnel Grounds. A protector deity that is usually depicted as two skeletons, one male and the other female. With three round red eyes and wide smiling mouths displaying canine teeth they glare at each other. The Father on the left holds aloft a bone stick with the right hand and in the left a blood filled skullcup held to the heart, wearing a tiger skin, standing on a conch shell. The Mother holds a stalk of grain in the upraised right and a wealth vase in the left, wearing various silks, standing on cowrie shells.

It is important not to confuse the protector deities Shri Shmashana Adhipati, Father & Mother, with the skeleton dancers found in the various systems of Tibetan religious Cham dance. Those skeleton figures are representing worldly spirits, whereas Shri Shmashana Adhipati are enlightened deities categorized as Wisdom protectors. Shri Adhipati is found in the Secret Essence Wheel Tantra and is associated with the Chakrasamvara Cycle of Tantras.
