Zen priest Karen Maezen Miller will lead an introduction to Zen practices and teachings on her newest book Paradise in Plain Sight, during the weekend retreat October 23rd – 25th. Participants will receive a full taste of the Zen tradition. She will teach zazen (Zen meditation) with its emphasis on the breath, walking meditation, and an introduction to Zen chanting. These are the traditional mindfulness practices that are incorporated into a Zen retreat. This retreat will also teach on Zen lessons in fearlessness, forgiveness, presence, acceptance, and contentment. The teachings are personal and informal, appropriate to all practitioners who like Maezen Miller gathers inspiration from the ground beneath her feet to remind us that paradise is always here and now. Santikaro, a former Theravada monk, returns to the Rime Buddhist Center to present the full range of practice of mindfulness with breathing.
Mindfulness with Breathing is the primary meditative system of Early Buddhism. In it, the Buddha outlined a series of mindful contemplations that begin with the breathing body and work up through insight into the nature of Mind and Dhamma culminating in true knowing and liberation. Santikaro will offer an overview of this system Friday evening, September 11, along with guided practice in the basics of mindful breathing. Have you always wanted to understand Buddhism? Buddhism is a 2,500 year old tradition that teach us how to end pain and suffering in ourselves and others. Class Fee: $15 class fee (for the entire twelve week course); $20 text fee
The book club meets on the first Wednesday of each month from 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. and is open to anyone who would like to participate. The plan is to study one book by H.H. Dalai Lama for a month and then select another book by His Holiness. Our next book to study is : “Stages of Meditation.” Copies of this text will be available in Rime Gift Shop. Our monthly half-day retreat is offered on the first Saturday of each month. The focus will be upon shamatha meditation and it is a wonderful way to deepen your practice. The retreats will focus on releasing ego clinging and training the mind in compassion through shamatha meditation. Beginners are encouraged to attend, but must first have received meditation instruction. We will be observing noble silence throughout the retreat. Tea and bottled water will be provided.
