Lama Rod Owens: Radical Dharma

We are extremely delighted to welcome to Kansas City and the Rime Center Lama Rod Owen, November 10th & 12th. Lama Rod will be teaching from his book Radical Dharma. Igniting a long-overdue dialogue about how the legacy of racial injustice and white supremacy plays out in society at large and Buddhist communities in particular, this urgent call to action outlines a new dharma that takes into account the ways that racism and privilege prevent our collective awakening. Bridging the world of spirit and activism, Radical Dharma urges a compassionate response to the systemic, state-sanctioned violence and oppression that has persisted against black people since the slave era. With national attention focused on the recent killings of unarmed black citizens and the response of the Black-centered liberation groups such as Black Lives Matter, Radical Dharma demonstrates how social transformation and personal, spiritual liberation must be articulated and inextricably linked.

Kum Nye – Tibetan Yoga Workshop with Santosh Philip

We are delighted to welcome to Kansas City and the Rime Center Santosh Philip, September 22nd through 24th. Santosh will be leading us in a system of Tibetan yoga called Kum Nye. Based on a traditional healing system, Kum Nye Yoga helps to relieve stress, transform negative patterns and promote balance and health. Developed by Tibetan Lama Tarthang Tulku, this presentation of Kum Nye practices is thoroughly modern and adapted specifically to suit modern needs. The practice of Kum Nye includes stillness, movement, postures, breathing exercises, self-massage and a little bit of visualization. These practices address the three kinds of tension held in the body – 1) superficial tensions, 2) blockages in the energy channels, and 3) knots in the chakras.

Letter Writing to Buddhist Inmates Training

The Prison Outreach is adding a new way to join in- through writing letters to a Buddhist inmate. We are collaborating with Inner Peace Prison Dharma and Urgyen Pete Machik Potts. Rime members came together for the first training on Sunday, April 23rd. This training helped not only prepare members on what to expect as a volunteer and provide guidelines to know, but also to offer a way to support each other. Support the Jindak Community to Meet Our Goal

With the increase in expenses from the last few years donations are no longer enough for us to break even after we pay our rent and utilities. We are challenging our Sangha members to help us meet our basic financial obligation by signing up for our Jindak Community. Our Goal is to raise $5,500 through the Jindak Community on a monthly basis to meet our basic needs of rent and utilities. The Rime Center has both ACH and Paypal options for you to support us in meeting our goal. If you’re not comfortable with a monthly commitment, there is a donation box to the right as you leave the shrine room.

Half Day Zen Meditation Retreat

The Rime Center’s half-day meditation will continue throughout the spring and summer. The practice will consist of Zazen, seated meditation, Kinhin, walking meditation, chanting and Samu, or mindful work. Meditation will be from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm and the facilitators will be Nova Bradfield and Vickie Cumberland. We will follow the practice taught by visiting teacher, Karen Maezen Miller, with a brief instruction at the beginning of the meditation. Continue reading →

Social Justice Committee makes Fall Reading Selection

The Social Justice Book Club has selected Radical Dharma: Talking Race Love and Liberation by Rev Angel Kyodo Williams, Lama Rod Owens with Jasmine Syedullah.

Discussion will take place on October 24 @ 7:30 pm. The book will be for sale in the bookstore. All are welcome to participate.
